Born Before 725: When One Area Code Held the Whole Valley

There are two kinds of phone numbers in this valley.

Ask a Local for theirs. If it starts with 702, you are talking to somebody who was here. Maybe not born here. But here. Before the town got its second area code and a phone number stopped being proof of anything.

One state. One code.

1947. Bell engineers sit down and carve the country into calling zones. Nevada gets 702. All of it. Reno, Elko, Tonopah, and a railroad town of about twenty thousand people that happened to have legal gambling and some very good ideas about neon.

That is the part worth sitting with. For half a century, every phone in Nevada rang behind the same three digits. The blackjack dealer on Fremont. The rancher up north. Same code. You dialed seven numbers and the whole state answered. And in this valley, the whole operation ran out of a blue-tiled building right on Las Vegas Boulevard.

The phone did not ask where you were from. The prefix already said it.

The splits

Growth shows up in the phone book before it shows up anywhere else.

December 12, 1998: the state splits. Reno, Carson City, and everything rural goes to 775. Clark County keeps 702, the way you keep the house in a divorce. By then the valley had over a million people and every one of them wanted a pager.

Then May 3, 2014. The line moves again, and this time it does not move on a map. The 725 overlay lands on top of the valley. Same streets. Same zip codes. New numbers. Ten-digit dialing becomes mandatory, and decades of muscle memory die in about a week.

Here is the thing about an overlay: it does not draw a border you can drive across. It draws one in time. Everybody who had a number kept it. Everybody who came after got a 725. Which means the area code stopped telling people where you live.

It started telling them when you got here.

A line you can hear

That is why Locals guard a 702 number like a land claim. It is proof of tenure in a city that implodes its own history for fun. Casinos fall. Restaurants close. The 702 stays.

Your kid's first phone is a 725. The new neighbors from Orange County, 725. That call about your car's extended warranty, definitely a 725.

702 feels like home. That is not nostalgia talking. That is seniority.
