Before movie theaters became interchangeable megaplexes, Las Vegas had Red Rock 11.
Opened on West Charleston in 1966, Red Rock grew from a single-screen theater into an 11-screen complex by 1973, briefly making it the largest multi-theater complex in the world. But Locals remember much more than the number of screens.
Inside was an old-fashioned Main Street atmosphere with brick storefronts, black wrought iron, snack bars, arcades, shops, and a painted sky overhead. It was the kind of place where families spent Saturday afternoons, teenagers met friends, and a movie date started well before the previews.
For generations of Las Vegas kids, Red Rock 11 was simply where you went to the movies.
It closed in 1999 and was demolished in 2002, but anyone who remembers wandering that indoor Main Street before finding their theater knows why this place still comes up in conversations decades later.
