Vacation Village was never trying to out-glitz the Strip. That was part of its charm.
Opened in 1990 at 6711 South Las Vegas Boulevard, the small Southwest-themed hotel-casino sat near the southern edge of the Strip, long before Town Square occupied the site. Inside were the kinds of things that gave old Las Vegas its personality: video poker, a 24-hour buffet, bingo, a race and sports book, bars, table games, and plenty of coupons.
It was smaller, scruffier, and considerably less polished than the resorts rising farther north. For the people who remember stopping in, that was exactly the point.
Vacation Village closed in January 2002. Today, part of Town Square stands where it once did.
Another little piece of Las Vegas that disappeared while the city kept moving south.
